Dr. Malcolm Bangor-Jones is a retired civil servant of the Scottish Government who has maintained an interest in the history of the Scottish Highlands for many years. He is presently engaged in an examination of the movement of people from the county of Sutherland in the north west Highlands of Scotland to Canada: primarily Atlantic Canada and Ontario. The project attempts to answer the seemingly simple but very difficult questions of when, where and why.

The main focus is on a number of known or lesser-known areas of Canada with a concentration of settlers from Sutherland although account is also being taken of immigrants who set out on their own and were often of higher social status. The aim is to establish the timing and composition of immigration to Canada and examine these in relation to wider changes in Highland economy and society, particularly to landlord reorganisation and to processes of clearance and resettlement. Movement to Canada will be set against competing destinations both overseas but more particularly to elsewhere in Scotland and the UK.
