As Provost and Vice-President, Academic & Research (Interim), Dr. Sam Veres is the chief academic officer of Saint Mary’s University. He is responsible for the systemic leadership, administration, and strategic direction of all academic programs, research initiatives, and faculty affairs across the university community. He also plays a crucial role in the university budget by overseeing the allocation of resources to support academic priorities.
Dr. Veres has been an integral member of the Saint Mary’s University community since joining the faculty in 2013. Prior to his appointment as Interim Provost, he served with distinction as the Dean of the Faculty of Science. His administrative leadership at Saint Mary's also includes previous appointments as an Associate Dean and a professor within the Division of Engineering.
A professional engineer (P.Eng.) and a Full Professor, Dr. Veres is also an accomplished researcher in the field of biomedical engineering, leading multidisciplinary studies that combine engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine to study the mechanics and structure of load-bearing tissues and biomaterials. His notable scientific contributions include winning the prestigious International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine (ISSLS) Prize three times, most recently in 2020.
