We help students focus on what matters most.
Our program provides short-term accommodations at weekly rates for qualifying individuals, offering a safe and convenient place to stay while gaining the experience they need.
Eligibility:
Individuals seeking housing for the duration of their healthcare or other short term work learning practicums, placements, or other programs through a school, university, trade, or health‑care institution. (This includes individuals in Mitacs programs).
Accommodations:
Individuals will be accommodated in our FLEX Spaces, which consists of a Shared Double room or a Super Single room in our Rice Residence. All Rice apartments have a shared bathroom and kitchen. Kitchens are equipped with a range and full-sized refrigerators. All bedrooms within the apartment are private with a lockable door.
Residents are responsible for providing their own:
Card-operated laundry facilities are available. Janitorial service is provided for common areas throughout the building (i.e. elevator lobby, hallways), but FLEX residents are responsible for cleaning their apartments themselves. Please refer to the Residence Handbook for more information.
FLEX Space Rates:
FLEX spaces are charged at a flat weekly rate regardless of assignment in a double or super single room. Assignments are based off availability and operational requirements.
How to Apply:
Applications are available by request via the Housing & Residence office and require a non-refundable application fee.
To receive access to the application please email residence.housing@smu.ca.
What is the $500 Residence Confirmation Deposit?
The $500 Residence Confirmation Deposit is used to secure a FLEX bed space in residence and will be returned to your Self-Service Banner Account approximately 10 business days after your check-out date.
How will I know what my room assignment is?
FLEX Space assignments are based on availability and operational needs. Individuals will be informed in advance of their check-in date whether they have been assigned to a double or super single bedspace and what their room number is.
Will I have a roommate?
FLEX spaces operate on a rolling check-in and check-out basis, and apartments may become shared at any time. Residents assigned to a FLEX space should expect that these spaces may already be shared or could become a shared space during their stay.
Are Meal Plans available?
Meal plans are optional and are subject to availability, as dining hall options are limited outside of the academic year. Please reach out to SMU Dining directly via email or at the SMU Dining office, 2nd floor Loyola Building in Loyola 206 to see what meal plan options are available.
